Debt advice - why should I look for it?
Being in debt can be a stressful experience, but why would anyone seek debt advice? What's wrong with simply addressing your debts on your own?
It's true that debt advice isn't necessarily an essential part of clearing your debts. In fact, many people manage to clear their debts and become debt free on their own. However, the question is: would some help from a professional debt adviser have made it easier?
The main (and possibly most important) thing a debt adviser can offer is experience -quite simply, they should know a lot more about how debt 'works' than the 'average' person in debt. For example, a professional debt adviser will know the answers to questions such as:
1. Which of my debts are priority and non-priority? How does that affect the way I address them?
2. What happens/what should I do if I can't afford my next payment?
3. What happens if my lender wants to take me to court - and what rights do I have if they do?
An experienced debt adviser should be able to talk you through the pros and cons of the different strategies people can adopt when it comes to addressing their debts.
There are, of course, advantages to each method, but which method would be appropriate for someone in your situation? An adviser will be able to assess your financial circumstances and suggest the right approach for you.
When should I seek debt advice?
Some people choose to seek debt advice as soon as their finances get out of hand, while others will wait until they are on the verge of bankruptcy - it's down to their personality as much as their debts.
However, in general, the sooner you seek debt advice, the easier you should find it to clear your debts.
